THERMAL SPRING WATER AND SAINT GERVAIS
HISTORY
Saint-Gervais les Bains has long been regarded as a place of healing and rejuvenation. In the Middle Ages, shepherds used to graze their flocks in the vicinity of the Saint-Gervais thermal spring. Maître Gontard had samples of the spring water analyzed and discovered its curative properties. He opened the Saint-Gervais baths in 1807, and they soon became a popular medical establishment, bringing relief to countless visitors.
Unfortunately, one summer evening in 1892, a torrent of mud and ice swept down from the mountains, destroying a large part of the building. Despite this setback, work was undertaken to rebuild and improve the spa complex. By the time of the First World War, Saint-Gervais had become a modern medical resort.
Today, Saint-Gervais les Bains is much more than a place of healing, it’s an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and rejuvenation.
