"PRATZ DE MEGÈVE"

HISTORY

In the 14th century, a small group of pioneering farmers arrived at La Thona, now La Tonnaz. Determined, they set about establishing the first farms in what would become the Pratz de Megève, later called Praz-sur-Arly.

For centuries, the beautiful Pratz de Megève region has been no stranger to major upheavals. During the French Revolution, Savoy was wrested from the kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia and annexed by the new republic. Shortly afterwards, however, Savoy returned to the Piedmontese-Sardinian fold.

In the early 1800s, the small but dynamic mountain commune of Pratz de Megève was eager to gain independence from its larger neighbor, the town of Megève. After years of political wrangling, separation was finally declared in 1869 and became official in 1870.

In 1907, Le Pratz de Megève was officially renamed Praz-sur-Arly, a landmark decision that severed its ties with its former commune and gave it complete independence.

From the 1930s onwards, Praz-sur-Arly became increasingly popular with tourists. In 1945, the first ski lifts were installed at Cernix and Coupeau, leading to a sharp increase in winter sports activities. Even today, skiing remains one of its most popular attractions!
